What is Advanced Practice?

[WCPT DEFINITION]

Where do Advanced Practice Physiotherapists Work?

APP is well established in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal services in Ireland where Physiotherapists form the first point of contact for many patients referred to consultant orthopaedic and rheumatology services. APP is also emerging in other areas such as neurology, cardiorespiratory, paediatrics, care of older persons, women’s health and pelvic rehabilitation. Advanced Practice is not limited to the public health service and there are growing examples of Advanced Practice services in the private health setting.

How do they make a difference?

Advanced Practice Physiotherapists radically alter the care pathway for patients. The APPs working in the Orthopaedic and Rheumatology services alone managed to remove over 100,000 patients from the Orthopedic/Rheumatology waiting list resulting in faster access to necessary care for these people. Respiratory Integrated Care physiotherapists are providing acute clinics for people in the community that would previously have required hospital visits. Women’s Health physiotherapists are using Ultrasound to guide intervention and achieve enhanced outcomes for the women they treat.
